A supporter giving out free hi-fives at the marathon

You can hear them yelling as you near the finish line. You see them gathered in throngs along the last leg. They are frequently the crucial difference whether the race gets finished or not. They are an essential part of the ‘soul’ of the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon. So, who exactly are these people?

They are your supporters, your friends or family.

Runners are the first to admit that supporters often play an integral part in their ability to complete a race. Andrea Furst, Head of Sports Psychology at the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) says, “Positive encouragement can be a source of motivation for athletes. It directs an athlete’s mind to positive thoughts of 'I can do this'.  Positive thoughts create positive emotions, which, in turn, create positive behaviour.”

On Sunday, 6 December 2009, runners can be sure that “positive motivation” will not be lacking as thousands of supporters are expected to be waiting patiently at the stands and at the sidelines as their loved ones race towards the coveted finish line at the Padang.

Their tireless efforts and energy on race day are admirable, and they are a great source of encouragement to the runners, all while lending a colourful spirit and verve to the event festivities.

For the first time, supporters will be able to enjoy activities specially organised for them. A fun-filled carnival comprising two themes, Park Fiesta and Music by the Park, will be held at the East Coast Park, which forms a lengthy part of the route for the marathon runners.

Keen on showing your support and cheering the runners on, and win prizes while doing all that? The Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon organisers have in store for supporters three competitions, giving them the chance to win attractive cash prizes. Trigger Happy is a competition that will capture the best photo moments of the marathon. Cheer Day Out will feature supporters singing, cheering and dancing. Supporters can even lend colour to the event by adorning themselves in their most outrageous outfits in the Fancy Dress Carnival. Get ready to enjoy a day of excitement and camaraderie  on Sunday, 6 December 2009. Cheer the runners on as they pound the road at the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon. However, if you are unable to be at the marathon, fret not, you can still enjoy the action live on StarHub’s SuperSports (Channel 22) on 6 December from 5.15 am.

Your spirit, our inspiration.
