LIONSXII RAN RIOT AGAINST SABAH WITH A 9-0 VICTORY

It was a night to remember for LionsXII and the 6,289 fans at the Jalan Besar Stadium as they thrashed Sabah 9-0; the biggest score line victory in the Malaysia Super League this season. The Lions opened the scoring in the 18th minute after Agu Casmir knocked home the ball from close range, from a Baihakki Khaizan header. The Lions doubled their lead four minutes later through a superb Hariss Harun volley inside the box. Stand-in skipper Hariss got his second of the night on the 41st minute, curling a low shot past Sabah’s goalkeeper Irwan Jamil, from just outside the six-yard box.

HOME UNITED BASKETBALL CLUB WINS FOURTH WOMEN’S NATIONAL BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Home United Basketball Club won the 2012 Women’s National Basketball Championship (WNBC) after defeating Qian Xi Basketball Club 76-58. It was Home United’s fourth championship in the last decade. This year final was the fifth consecutive meeting between long-time rivals Home United and Qian Xi, with Home United out to avenge last year final defeat to Qian Xi. Singapore’s highest-level annual women’s basketball tournament saw 14 teams taking part, only to be outplayed by Home United and Qian Xi, who marched into the finals unbeaten. The game got off to a slow start, understandably, as both teams did not want to make any mistake. Home United edged the tight first half encounter to lead by three points, 35-32, heading into the third quarter.

SINGAPORE FOUGHT OFF DETERMINED INDONESIA TO WIN MEN’S UNDER-23 AND WOMEN’S WATER POLO GOLD

Singapore and Indonesia went head-to-head in the men’s Under-23 and women’s open category in the final day of water polo action in the inaugural Southeast Asia (SEA) Swimming Championships 2012. The first gold medal match of the evening saw Singapore’s women team going up against Indonesia. It was a bad start for the host as they struggled to mount any credible offense, trailing 1-0 at the end of the first quarter. Singapore stepped up a notch and started to put pressure on the visiting team in the second quarter. Their hard work was rewarded shortly as two thunderous shot from distance found the back of the net. Building on the momentum gained, the women scored another goal to close out the first half leading 3-1. The pace of the match slowed down in the final two quarters as fatigue started to set in on both teams, a result of the aggressive play in the first half. The Indonesians tried to up the tempo to find the equalizing goal but were often left frustrated by Singapore’s full court press defense. The match was put to bed with less than three minutes to go when Ooi Si Hui Melissa scored, giving Singapore a three-goal advantage. Singapore held on to win the women’s water polo gold medal, beating Indonesia 5-3.
