CLOSE TO 100 INTERNATIONAL AND LOCAL TEAMS PARTICIPATED AT THE INAUGURAL DBS MARINA REGATTA

Against the stunning backdrop of Singapore’s Marina Bay financial district, the inaugural DBS Marina Regatta, held over two days from 5
th to 6th May 2012, attracted close to 100 international and local teams.

It was one of the biggest international water sports festival held in Singapore, with prize monies totaling $178,000, the largest for an international dragon boat race.

The rain brought about a few stoppages in the race schedule as competitors and supporters raced for the shelter. The atmosphere however, was not subdued, as people mixed and mingled around in a joyous mood.

The competitors brought their game face on when the weather threat was cancelled, and races continued. They could be seen practicing their rhythm and rowing techniques at any open spaces available in a crowded Marina Bay waterfront.

The teams battled it out across seven race categories that attracted top international teams from Hong Kong, Indonesia and Malaysia, to tertiary institution, corporate teams, Singapore community teams and the local international community; all for a place in the grand finals.

Before the DBS Premier Open and DBS Premier Women grand final could be flagged off, the Singapore National Team, who made it to both finals gave a salute to the guest-of-honour, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, in a ceremonial sail past.

The Singapore National Team then went on to compete in what was an exciting and close battle, only to fall up short against the Indonesia National Team.

The action wasn’t confined to the waters of Marina Bay as the [email protected] Marina Bay hosted The Regatta Carnival. The family carnival saw dragon boat-themed games to food and live performances; all in the clear view of a giant screen broadcasting the races live.

The inaugural DBS Marina Regatta was a success and the President of the Singapore Dragon Boat Association (SDBA), Dr Lam Pin Min, is already looking forward to the next iteration.

He said:  "The inaugural DBS Marina Regatta has brought international dragon boating back to the waters of Singapore in a big way. We are excited to see the regatta raise the profile and standard of dragon boating in Singapore. Many of the top international teams competed, which speaks of the prestige of the regatta. SDBA looks forward to the continued partnership with DBS to make the next regatta an even greater success!"
