A proper warm up can increase blood flow to working muscles. This results in decreased muscle stiffness, less risk of injury and improved performance. Additional benefits of warming up include physiological and psychological preparation.

A proper warm-up should raise your body temperature by one or two degrees Celsius and is divided into three phases:
1. General warm-up ;
2. Stretching ; and
3. Sport-specific activity.

It is very important that you do the general warm-up before you stretch as it will ensure better blood circulation and muscle elasticity in the body. Stretching a cold muscle without warming up can increase the risk of injury from pulls and tears.

General Warm-Up

The general warm-up should begin with joint-rotations, starting from either your toes and working your way up, or from your fingers and working your way down. You should perform slow circular movements, both clockwise and counter-clockwise, until your joints move smoothly.

After you are done with joint rotations, you should engage in at least five minutes of gradual aerobic activity such as jogging, jumping rope, or any other activity that will increase your cardiovascular output. The objective is to raise your core body temperature and get your blood flowing as improves muscle performance and flexibility and reduces the likelihood of injury.

Stretching

Proceed to engage in slow and relaxed, static stretching once you have completed the general warm-up. You should start with your back, followed by your upper body and lower body. You can find more information on good and thorough static stretches in most books on stretching. Unfortunately, not everyone has the time and patience. If you are one such person, you should at least take the time to stretch all the muscles that will be heavily used during your sporting activity.

Once you have completed your static stretches, you should engage in some light dynamic stretching like leg-raises and arm-swings. That said; do not work your muscles to the point of fatigue. It is just a warm-up to the real workout which comes later.

Sport-Specific Activity

The final part of your warm-up should be focused on performing movements that are of lower intensity than the actual sport. This uses the specific skills of a sport and is sometimes called a related warm-up. Such sport-specific activity is beneficial because it improves coordination, balance, strength, and response time, and may reduce the risk of injury. For example, before a soccer game, after warming up and stretching, the players usually form smaller groups to run around and juggle the ball.

Warm Up Tips brought to you by SSC Sports Safety Division.

Think Safe.
