Even as the roar of F1 engines in Marina Bay die down, and thousands of floodlights used to light up Singapore’s 1st of its kind Marina Bay Formula 1 night street circuit are removed, Singapore is gearing up for more top sporting action in October.
Headlining Singapore’s sports events calendar is a sport most Singaporeans can identify with - from a participant’s and spectator’s point of view - table tennis.
Come October 28 2011, the world’s top table tennis players will converge in Singapore to battle for top honours in the Volkswagen Women’s World Cup.
Singaporeans will have a chance to savour top table tennis action right in their own backyard as Singapore’s top women paddlers take on the giants in the table tennis world. For the thousands of aspiring young table tennis players who were inspired by Team Singapore’s silver medal win in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, this is a rare opportunity to get up close and personal with 'live' world class table tennis action.
If table tennis is not your cup of tea, then head down to Marina Bay to witness the 2011 International Canoe Federation’s (ICF) Canoe Marathon World Championships from 19 - 23 October 2011. Singapore has the privilege of being the first Asian country to host this event. Marina Bay’s breathtaking view will once again become the background canvas for another major international sporting event.
Are you ready to shout yourself hoarse? Are you ready to gather at ‘kopi tiams’ to cheer Team Singapore’s 400 over athletes as they do battle in Jakarta and Palembang during the South East Asian (SEA) Games and ASEAN Para Games from 11 - 22 November 2011 and 12 - 20 December December 2011 respectively? If you are, then you are in for a treat.
Through a nationwide well-wishing campaign launched by the Singapore Sports Council (SSC), in partnership with NTUC FairPrice, our athletes will embark on their quest for glory with the support of their fellow countrymen.
For the first time, Singaporeans can share their everyday stories of determination, perseverance and grit, dedicating the values they feel best represents the Singapore Spirit for the athletes to bring to the games.
So go ahead, pen your thoughts at
www.teamsingapore.com.sg. Write a note to Isabelle Li, Hui Fen, Tao Li and many more. Tell them what you want them to bring to the games to bring glory for Singapore.
You can also catch live action on television. Check the TV programme schedules for more details when we get closer to the games.
