POSB Everyday Champions 2009 for Sports Award winner Sallehuddin Salleh lends a helping hand to underprivileged kids |
Sallehuddin Salleh may have had years of experience coaching teenaged footballers to prevent them from going wayward, but coaching underprivileged kids was still a first for him. The 56-year-old retiree conducted a two-hour football clinic on 22nd February for 24 kids aged between 13 to 16 years of age. These kids were from the Association for Persons with Special Needs (APSN).
.
The Warriors have also set many firsts in
the S-League – they were the first club to
win back to back doubles (winning both the
S-League and Singapore Cup) in 2007 and 2008,
and they were also the first Singapore club
to play in the prestigious Asian Champions
League. The success must surely be the envy
of many, but as The Play Times sat
down and spoke to head coach and reigning
S-League Coach of the Year, Richard Bok, it
appears to be just business as usual at Choa
Chu Kang.

Dear Readers
I picked up my very first racket game – badminton
– under the influence
of my school teacher. An avid badminton |
 |
| player, he never failed to encourage
anyone and was always getting every of his students
to try the sport.
I remembered him with his huge bag full of rackets, like a modern day
Santa Claus without the white glowing beard, loaning them to students
(and even their parents) who could not afford them. And when they were
returned damaged, he would merely buy new ones without reprimanding the
kids.
He is the truly a great and selfless advocate of sports. He’s probably
retired by now, but I am sure he’s still playing the game in some sports
hall out there and spreading the joy of sports. He is the kind of person
I would nominate for the POSB Everyday Champions for Sports Award 2010.
And if you too know of someone like this great
teacher of mine, remember to visit SingaporeSports.sg/POSBChampions
and nominate him or her.

The BADminton Player
*Loving the sport does not mean that I excel in
it. I certainly write better than I can play. And my chances of winning
the coveted Macbook in the latest SingaporeSports.sg contest are probably
higher than me ever winning a badminton game! |
