Richard Bok – The Warrior King |
With the S-League season kicking off on 1
February 2010, all eyes will be on one team
- the Singapore Armed Forces FC. The Warriors
have been on the warpath since the inception
of the S-League in 1996, and have won the
title a record eight times, including the
last four consecutive years from 2006 to 2009.
The Warriors have also set many firsts in
the S-League – they were the first club to
win back to back doubles (winning both the
S-League and Singapore Cup) in 2007 and 2008,
and they were also the first Singapore club
to play in the prestigious Asian Champions
League. The success must surely be the envy
of many, but as The Play Times sat
down and spoke to head coach and reigning
S-League Coach of the Year, Richard Bok, it
appears to be just business as usual at Choa
Chu Kang.

Slingers on the cusp of glory |
The future looks bright for the Singapore Slingers as they have secured a spot in the playoffs and will possibly, emerge victorious in the Asean Basketball League.
It has been a rollercoaster journey for the Slingers as they started off the league with an impressive four wins in a row, before being handed their first defeat against the Philippine Patriots. As the saying goes, “What goes up must come down.”

A New Home: After 23 months of searching and building the race track, Kartright Speedway is ready to take off.

The Grand Opening of Kartright Speedway
A New Home Where Speeding Is Not A Problem
|
One would hardly think to find Singapore’s first permanent competition-length karting race track to be located directly opposite an Army training camp and enclosed by an industrial factory. However, despite the lack of a scenic and more glamorous background, it makes perfect sense. This 750 m race track is located at a place where the roar and hum of the race karts are nothing out of the ordinary. |

Winner of POSB Everyday Champions Award '09 (Coaches Category): Bobok Viacheslav
|
 |
|
The Champions who Live and Breathe Sports |
25 coaches were amongst the 57 winners honoured
in the inaugural POSB Everyday Champions Awards
2009 (Award) ceremony.
For winner Bobok Viacheslav, it was all about the
love for the sport. His passion for fencing began
when he was just a kid. Deeply inspired by his father,
Bobok Gennady who was awarded ‘Honoured Coach Award’,
Slava (as he is known affectionately by his charges)
embarked on his coaching career in 1987 and has
not looked back since. |

Dear Readers
If you had thought that January had been an exciting
month for sports, February promises to be even bigger. |
 |
The Slingers have made it through
to the playoffs of the inaugural ASEAN Basketball
League. Led by stars Michael LeBlanc, Kyle Jeffers
and local hero Hong Wei Jian, the team is looking
to bring back glory to Singapore.
And on the field, we will see two new foreign teams vying with the usual suspects for bragging rights in the brand new season of the S-League. New additions Etoile FC and Beijing Gou’an are formidable opponents, and SAFFC, Home United and Gombak United will have to be on their toes.
That said, it’s time for me to get my Hougang
Stadium season pass and watch my perennial strugglers
Sengkang Punggol avoid another wooden spoon.
But even if they do, I will stand right behind
them for a true fan will stick by his or her team
through thick and thin.

always been the Achilles heel. After being rejected
at the various trials for several teams, I have
decided to stick to reporting on football instead
of playing it. |
