SAFFC’s hopes of gaining a first ever victory in the Asian Champions League will have to wait a little longer, after they lost 2-0 to Korea’s, Samsung Suwon Bluewings on Wednesday.
Goals in each half by Brazilian duo Juninho and Jose Mota put paid to the Warriors hopes, and the Warriors played the most of the second half with ten men, after Croatian defender Ivan Lovric was given his marching orders for two bookable offences.
However, it was not all one way traffic, as the Warriors did put their more illustrious opponents under pressure at times, but wayward finishing- Indra Shahdan’s shocking miss a prime example, undermined the Warriors good work.
Juninho gave Suwon the lead with an unstoppable freekick deep into first half stoppage time, and Jose Mota added a second in the 75th minute, curling a brilliant left foot shot beyond the reach of SAFFC goalkeeper Shahril Jantan. Mota could have bagged a second after a mesmerizing run which left the SAFFC defence bewildered, only to see his shot cannon off the post.
SAFFC coach Richard Bok was happy with the performance of his team, but bemoaned the stoppage time goal. “We defended well until they scored that very good goal in injury time in the first half. If we had gone into the break 0-0, it could have been a different game”.
SAFFC will next face Japanese giants, Gamba Osaka at home on March 23 on Matchday 3.
