Last September, the world witnessed the world’s first FORMULA ONE night race and Asia’s first FORMULA ONE street race. Come 25 to 27 September this year, the 2009 FORMULA 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prixwill witness more thrills and spills with circuit improvements and a more exciting Singapore GP Season.
The third most-watched sport in the world after the Olympics and the World Cup, FORMULA ONE is one of the most exciting sports, given the speed of the race cars and the high-glamour factor with various celebrities in attendance. Every FORMULA ONE season comprises a series of races held all over the world, and promises an unprecedented adrenaline-pumping action, uncanny engineering and unexpected surprises. This year, 10 teams will race over 17 circuits across the globe to score the official championship title.
Last year, the 2008 FORMULA 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix revved up more than 110,000 fans at the Marina Bay circuit. The world witnessed an exhilarating race where after 61 laps spread across a 5.1-kilometre long street circuit, Fernando Alonso of the Renault team won the contest despite starting the race from the last position.
This multiple award-winning race was praised as one of the most dramatic and atmospheric races by industry players, the media and fans. “The guys here have done an absolutely unbelievable job. The effort that had gone into this circuit in the last 12 months is nothing short of phenomenal. I think they have just raised the bar considerably for a new circuit and the spectacle of racing at night in a big city such as Singapore is really exciting,” said Red Bull Racing team principal, Christian Horner.
Come 25 to 27 September 2009, the Marina Bay will echo again to the roar of FORMULA ONE cars. This year, the circuit is being fine-tuned to provide more action for race fans. Turns 1, 13 and 14 will be modified to enable greater over-taking opportunities, while a dedicated pit lane entry will be added and the pit exit upgraded to better ensure the drivers’ safety. The naming of three corners on the circuit – Sheares (Turn 1), Memorial (Turn 7) and Singapore Sling (Turn 10) – also adds a local touch to the race.
In addition, the Singapore GP Season returns from 18 to 27 September 2009 to provide a complete race experience for everyone, featuring a more exciting line-up this year that includes various FORMULA ONE-themed activities, entertainment events and lifestyle festivals, as well as shopping and dining promotions.
