The buzz about town has been on for the first-ever Asian Youth Games (AYG)!  Scoring yet another first in the sporting history of the Games, the little red dot will shine brighter still as the blazing flames from the inaugural AYG Torch Relay makes its way across the island come 28 and 29 June.

The Torch Relay, commemorating the start of the Games, will take place concurrently across three routes, each named after the Olympic values of Friendship, Respect and Excellence. Three torch-bearers will first set off from the Kallang Waterfront simultaneously on both days, 28 June being the Community Leg and 29 June being the School Leg.

Going down in record as the first of its kind in our country, we can all look forward to the opportunity to be part of this exciting historic moment as the torches travel through the heartlands and schools. Inspired by the beautiful tropical flower, the orchid, the routes will trace a three-petal shape round the eastern, central and western areas of the island.

The Community Leg on 28 June will see the three torches passing separately through landmarks within the five Community Development Councils (CDCs), including Yio Chu Kang Stadium, Jurong Point and East Coast Park, before returning to the National Stadium. The torches will then be travelling to 45 schools on the second day of the relay (29 June) before reaching the Singapore Indoor Stadium where we can witness the lighting up of the Games cauldron at the AYG Opening Ceremony.

To add to the hype, the Guest-of-Honour gracing this mega event is our very own Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. Other VIPs include Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean and all five CDC mayors. The Team Singapore athletes and community leaders will be amongst the some 200 torchbearers involved in the relay. This two-day event, boasting many entertaining activities, will see some 70,000 participants joining in the fun.

So, remember to mark down the dates in your calendar and be a part of the AYG momentous festivities. It’s time to celebrate Asia’s youth, our future!

* The trio (i.e. TPT Reporter, Big Mike and Mad Mark) to be there to witness this important occasion. You can count on us to bring you more updates next month!
