ARE YOU CYCLING SAFE?
The following are some simple safety tips for road cycling.
Just remember S.A.F.E.
Be Seen - Use lights at night and have reflectors on your bike. Light-colored clothing can make you more visible to motorists.
Be Aware - Ride defensively. Know what the other traffic is doing. Scan the road behind and shoulder check regularly. Be prepared to maneuver for safety even though bicycles have an equal right to use the road. Watch for cars entering from driveways.
Follow the - You have the same rights and responsibilities as all other road
Rules users. Use hand signals. Let others know where you are going. Avoid weaving in and out of traffic or around parked cars.
Extra Space - Ride in a straight line and have some space from the curb so you can move around road hazards. When riding beside parked cars, look for people inside.
Every time before going out on the road, be sure you check your bike and brake pads to be sure that they are in working condition. Each brake shoe pad should be wearing evenly and never separated more than approximately one eighth inch from the rim.
Cycle with a certified bike helmet.
