Aqua Aerobics Makes A Splash!
Are you praying to the stars to possess the lithe muscles of Brad Pitt or the svelte form of Angelina Jolie, without aggravating your feeble joints, or breaking into a stinky sweat? You might have just found your answer in Aqua Aerobics!
Performed in a pool where movements are synched with some upbeat music, no swimming skills are required for this fun and easy sport. You will usually be in an extended position and will be able to touch the ground. There are also two types of workouts available- shallow-water or deep-water, that you can choose to participate in.
Shallow-water aerobics takes place in mid-chest level water where your body is protected from impact but still has enough weight and leverage to control your movements. Deep-water aerobics, on the other hand, gives added resistance and protection to your body underwater and allows you to engage more muscle mass.
On top of providing a good cardio workout while toning your muscles and improving flexibility to your limbs, Aqua Aerobics is ideal for people with joint problems. This applies, in particular, to the elderly who may have trouble with vigorous aerobic movements but who still wish to have some fun keeping healthy!
The sport has been gradually gaining popularity through the years. Even though most participants are women over the age of 50, you should never mistake Aqua Aerobics as a sport for the old folks. Throw some equipment into the routine and the sport can turn into a real challenge even for the young and fit!
Simply speak to Ms Vikki Bte Jonied Annuar and you will instantly feel and be moved by her passion for the sport. As explained by the 32 year old freelance instructor who has 13 years of experience under her belt, “There is the ‘noodle’ made of Styrofoam as well as water dumbbells and ankle resistance (bands).” These tools allow for different difficulty levels as well as different extent of exertion.
“I have always mentioned that water is therapeutic. No matter how you feel on that day, once you get into the water and workout, I guarantee that you’ll feel good when you’re done.”
So why wait, start heading for the nearest Sports and Recreation Aquatic Centre and have a splashing good time!
