Defending Singapore League (S.League) champions, Tampines Rovers enjoyed
a perfect start to their season as they strolled past reigning RHB Singapore
Cup winners, Home United with a 2-0 score line to clinch the 2012 Great Eastern
Charity Shield title at the Jalan Besar Stadium yesterday.

runner-up Sylvia Ratonel’s sizzling performance, a healthy crowd of
about 4000 turned up to witness the two local powerhouses’ battle for the coveted title.
Tampines drew first
blood
Tampines started brightly and did not
have to wait long for the breakthrough as ‘Stags’ debutant, Davor Piskor - a former teammate of Tottenham Hotspur and Croatia midfielder
Luka Modric – headed in from close range after a headed cross from the right to break the deadlock.

With that goal, Tampines grew in
confidence and the hugely impressive duo of Ahmed Fahmie and Jamil Ali stepped
up their game, attempting to double the lead for Tampines.
The ‘Stags’ forward, Ahmed went very
close in the 14th minute when he executed a delightful lob which
narrowly sailed above the bar. Jamil was also a constant threat to Home United
with his speed and accurate shooting which made the Protectors’ custodian,
Lionel Lewis work till the break.
Unable to break the ‘Stags’ defence
On the other hand, the ‘Protectors’
strikers Frederic Mendy and Shotara
Ihata were a promising pair of strikers but delivered little as they could not
find a way past the impressive Tampines defence, a backline which was superbly
marshalled by Tampines captain, Mustafic Fahrudin.

The ‘Protectors’ came closest to
opening their account shortly before the break, but Home United’s startlet, Hafiz
Nor's low drive was superbly saved by Tampines’ newly signed custodian, Sasa
Dreven to keep the ‘Stags’ in the game just before half-time.
Protectors punished for not seizing their chances
After the break, Home United came on
and fired on all cylinders by taking numerous shots at goal. However, despite
winning the majority of free-kicks and corners in the game, Home United were
unable to convert any crosses into the back of the net.

After the Protectors’ constant waves
of attack, the Stags pushed on for another goal and were well rewarded on the
60th minute.
At the hour’s mark, Jamil crossed from
the left and found another debutant, Gligor Gligorov who smashed the ball home,
beating Lionel Lewis at his near post. It was in all honesty, the very least
Tampines deserved.
After that goal, the Protectors seemed dejected and they nearly
conceded a third when Jamil Ali skipped past a few challenges before launching
a rocket which missed the goal by a few inches.

Tampines claimed the win and Charity Shield
Home United huffed and puffed their
way to the final whistle in search of a consolation goal. But the bright yellow
wall was determined for a clean sheet and sent a clear message to other teams that
Tampines are not ready to give up their league title without a battle.

The victory gave Tampines their first silverware for the 2012
season, and their second consecutive Charity Shield title.

away to DPMM Brunei while Home United will be hosting Balestier Khalsa at the
Bishan Stadium.
