This year’s edition of the Standard Chartered marathon is bringing the annual event to a whole new level.

First, it was the change in the event name from “Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon” to “Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore”.

Second, instead of the usual categories in the event (full marathon, half marathon, 10-kilometres run, 10 kilometres wheelchair race, kids dash, corporate and charity challenge), the all new ‘Ekiden Relay’ has been introduced.

Originated from Japan, the Ekiden Relay will consist of six participants who will run a total of 42.195km. The first participant of the team will flag off at the same time as the full marathoners.

Third, the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore 2010 (SCMS) will have not one, but three starting points- Orchard Shopping Belt for the full marathon and Ekiden relay participants, Sentosa Gateway for the half marathon and Esplanade for the kids dash and 10 kilometre race.

Each scenic and unique route will take the participants past iconic landmarks of Singapore and all participants will end their race at Padang.

Lastly, Marathon Legend Dave McGillivray who has been appointed as Race Director for SCMS 2010 was in town yesterday. The founder and president of Dave McGillivray Sports Enterprise (DMSE) Sports will be part of the intensive preparations for the marathon come December 5th.

“We took the course tour yesterday. We’re familiar with the course although we don’t know it intimately well, but what we saw we were very impressed with. What I saw with this course is that aesthetically it doesn’t get any better.”

Produced and consulted on more than 900 mass-participatory athletic events throughout the world, including 23 Boston Marathons, the Marathon Legend believes that, “the most important aspect of a marathon is what goes on between the starting line and the finish line. The course and how the course is managed is the race. That’s the experience the runners really will take home with them."

Dave and his team, Ron Kramer and Bob Barnaby, will be back in Singapore once again before the marathon to assist with the preparations.

Previously known as the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon, the event has existed since 1982. The international race is held on the first Sunday of December every year.

Organised by Singapore Sports Council (SSC), this event will see an estimated total of 60,000 participants running during the morning of 5th December 2010.

Registration for all categories except the Kids Dash has already closed. For more information, please visit www.marathonsingapore.com.
