After finishing second in the Asian Games qualifying tournament in Dhaka, Bangladesh, the Singapore men’s hockey side are set for a re-appearance at the Guangzhou Asian Games from November 12-27.
Should they be given the nod by the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC), it would mark the end of a 12-year absence by the hockey team, when their last appearance was back in 1998 in Bangkok.
Although six of the seven teams in the qualifying tournament qualified for the Asian Games, a top three finish was always imperative for the boys in Bangladesh.
Singapore started with a 5-2 win over Thailand, followed by a shock 4-1 loss to Taiwan, before beating Hong Kong 3-1 in their third game. They then drew with top team Oman 1-1, before beating the hosts 1-0. However, they ended their campaign with a 3-1 defeat to Sri Lanka. However, their points tally was enough for second spot behind Oman, and sealing qualification to the games.
