The Olympic Flame has become such an iconic symbol in the international sports scene that the torch relay itself has been re-enacted many times in almost every major sports event in the world. (file photo)
In ancient Greek mythology, the Titan Prometheus stole fire from the Olympian Zeus and gave it to the mortals. He was celebrated for his bravery and a fire has since been kept alight throughout the celebration of the ancient Olympics. Over time, the ancient Olympics evolved into the modern Olympics as we know it today. One thing, however, remains constant – the spirit that the Olympic flame embodies.
Come 14 – 26 August, Singapore will go down in the history books for being the first city to host the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG). And what is an Olympics without the traditional torch relay to kick it all off? Starting in Olympia, Greece, the site of the ancient Olympic Games, the torch for the first YOG will go on to Berlin, Dakar, Mexico City, Auckland and Seoul, ending with a 6-day relay around Singapore.
Approximately 2400 Singaporeans will get a chance to be part of this historic week in contemporary Singaporean history. As torchbearers, these lucky people will uphold the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship, and Respect, passing on the spirit of the Games to the next person in line. The final leg will then see the torch taken to the Float@Marina, where the Youth Olympic Flame will be lit at the Singapore 2010 Opening Ceremony, kickstarting 2 weeks of intense competition.
Singapore Citizens and Singapore Permanent Residents above the age of 12 years old are all encouraged to apply and be a part of this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
