Defending champions Sneakers Stingrays opened their Fairprice Foundation Netball Super League 2010 campaign with a comprehensive 43-36 win over rivals M1 Sunfish on Saturday, March 13.

The Stingrays were 6-0 down midway through the first quarter, but a resurgent third quarter performance led by their goal attacker Diana Chew, who finished with 26 points for the night, steadied the ship for the Stingrays as they hung on for the opening win.

Sneakers Stingrays coach, Choo Loi Kian was delighted with the result but expressed discontent on the manner of the win.

“Our experience showed through in the end but it took too long for the team to get into the game. We have a lot of work to do and we have to fine tune our game if we are to have a chance in this competition.”

Coach Choo attributed the sluggish performance to small mistakes.

“In the first quarter, we made too many mistakes. There were too many stray passes and miscommunications. Lucky for us we kicked into fifth gear and managed to have more accurate passes and higher shooting percentage,” she said.

In the second match of the day, the Malaysian Arowanas cruised to a comfortable 36-30 win against the Mighty Mannas .Their dominance in the game was reflected in their 62 attempts on goal as compared to the Mighty Mannas 43.

Also getting off to a good start were the Magic Dolphins, who defeated newcomers Bedok King Vipers 32-27.

The Netball Super League will culminate with the grand final on May 1, and all matches will be held at the Jurong East Sports & Cultural Centre.
