Residents in Pasir Ris can look forward to have their sporting needs met whenthe brand-new, state-of-the-art Pasir Ris Sports Complex is ready in June 2011.

Costing an estimated $40 million to build, the facility will have built-in heat reduction features such as vertical green walls and sun-shading devices which will make for a comfortable and cool environment for residents to exercise or enjoy family outings in. Other ‘green’ features include landscaping to beautify the facade and reduce ambient heat gain, a rainwater harvesting system to irrigate the plants, and the exploratory use of energy recycling technology such as the use of photovoltaic light fittings. Amenities residents can enjoy at the facility include a swimming complex, a gymnasium, a sports hall, a dance studio and retail and F&B outlets.

Speaking at the ground breaking ceremony for the new Pasir Ris Sports Complex on Sunday, 20 December, Mr Alex Chan, Chairman of the Singapore Sports Council, said: “The Pasir Ris Sports Complex will be another shining example of the consumer-driven philosophy underpinning the development of the new Singapore Sports Council‘s Sports and Recreation Centres. It will offer residents a unique sporting experience with a strong lifestyle twist, including a diverse retail mix of shops along with ’green‘ and sustainable features.”

Joining Mr Chan for the ground breaking ceremony was Guest of Honour, Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean, who is also the Minister of Defence and Adviser to Pasir Ris-Punggol Grassroots Organisations. He was joined by Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Senior Parliamentary Secretary (MCYS and Transport) Teo Ser Luck and fellow Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC MPs Penny Low, Michael Palmer and Dr Ahmad Mohd Magad andgrassroots advisers.

When completed, the Pasir Ris Sports Complex will be the SSC’s 22nd Sports and Recreation Centre, and belongs to the SSC’s fourth generation of sports facilities that aim to offer residents a diverse retail mix and quality amenities that incorporate green and sustainable features. It features more innovative and community-focused designs to ensure a tailor-made customer experience for patrons, ultimately promoting sports interest within the community.
