Singapore Gymnastics announced today its Rhythmic Gymnastics group that will compete at the 2010 Rhythmic Gymnastics Asian Junior Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on February 14-20, 2010. This event will serve as the qualification competition for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games.
The group comprising of Chia Shing Eng Cecilia of CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls’ School, Ho Wei Yen Vivien, Miki Nomura, Phaan Yi Lin of Raffles Girls’ School (Secondary) and Sim Kwee Peng Ann of St. Margaret’s Secondary School, was selected following a two day event held at Seng Kang Sports Hall last weekend.
“The performances this weekend show that we are on the right path for the Youth Olympic Games,” said ZHU Xiaoping, National Coach of Rhythmic Gymnastics. “Some of our gymnasts have been challenged with injury, but we are confident that everyone will be in peak form for the Asian Junior Championships next February.”
“The overall results from this weekend’s performances were satisfactory,” said gymnast Ho Wei Yen Vivien. “We have been working hard at overcoming injuries while training for this event, and now our focus is getting ready for the qualifiers in February.”
“What’s really exciting is that there’s a lot of room for improvement within our group,” said Phaan Yi Lin, member of the Rhythmic Gymnastics team. “We will now go back to training and get ready for the next challenge of qualifying for the Youth Olympics.”
As host country of the 2010 Youth Olympic Games, Singapore Gymnastics (SG) doesn’t automatically qualify for the Games. According to the International Federation for Gymnastics (FIG), SG’s Rhythmic gymnastics team must compete at the 2010 Asian Junior Championships qualifying event and must reach a minimum average execution score of 7.50 in both exercises thus a total execution score of minimum 15 points.
“The selection process put in place for these games is similar to what they will be required to go through for other major games,” said CHOY Kah Kin, Secretary - Singapore Gymnastics and Head of Rhythmic Gymnastics Organizing Committee. “This is a valuable learning experience for our gymnasts as they pursue future major games.”
The 2010 Youth Olympic Games Rhythmic Gymnastics events will take place at the Bishan Sports Hall from August 14th to the 26th.
