A MEMORABLE VICTORY PARADE WITH TEAM SINGAPORE’S PARALYMPIANS

Team Singapore (TS) celebrated a successful performance from its team at the recent London 2012 Paralympic Games by holding a victory parade on Saturday, 15 September. Commencing at the Hougang Stadium and ending at the serene surroundings of the newly-opened Gardens By the Bay, the parade allowed fellow Singaporeans to join in the celebrations of the team’s achievements.

TS returned from London last week with a silver and a bronze medal, awarded to Laurentia Tan at the para-equestrian events. More than just the medals however, the overall performance by Team Singapore’s athletes at the Games painted a story of how critical sporting values such as perseverance and persistence has its rewards.

At the parade, the 8 athletes were given VIP treatment as reward for their efforts, with Aston Martins ferrying them for the journey starting from Hougang stadium. Cars and a subsequent entourage which included an open-top double decker bus followed suit starting from the early afternoon.

Onlookers and supporters waved and shouted their support for the athletes during the parade, as the cars passed through ION Orchard, [email protected] and Plaza Singapura. The hour-long journey then ended off on foot at The Gardens By the Bay, where the Guest-of-Honour, Mr Chan Chun Sing, Acting Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports and Mr Lawrence Wong, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Education & Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts, were on hand to welcome the athletes.

Chef De Mission Mr Franike Thanapal Sinniah could not contain his delight at the athletes performance in London, singling Laurentia Tan particularly for praise. He said: “I am very proud of all our athletes. They have all done spectacularly and have flown our (Singapore) flag high and with pride. Laurentia did especially well and bagged two individual medals - a silver and a bronze medal to better her own results from the previous Games. Her achievements show us that anything is possible with determination and hard work.”

He added, “The rest of the team did not let us down. They did not waver in the face of stronger competition and gave their all at every stage. They have inspired many Singaporeans."
