SINGAPORE NATIONAL GAMES 2012: THE GAMES ARE OFFICIALLY OPEN

SINGAPORE NATIONAL GAMES 2012: THE GAMES ARE OFFICIALLY OPEN

In a ceremony filled with colour and excitement from spectators and performers alike with people coming from all walks of life, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong declared the inaugural Singapore National Games (SNG) open.

The sporting event of the year in Singapore, the Games will last from 1st September to the 9th of September 2012 and will be held at various sports venues across the island. So just what is the Singapore National Games?

Jointly organised by the Singapore Sports Council (SSC), the People’s Association (PA) and its grassroots organizations, and the National Sports Associations (NSAs), the SNG 2012 is the sports festival to showcase some of our best sporting talents at grassroots level.

It is open for participation to all Singaporeans and foreigners working in Singapore. Teams can be formed with fellow residents in the community and they would have the chance to pit their skills against others in 10 sports. The sports for this year’s SNG are: Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Bowling, Dragon Boat, Football, Netball, Sepak Takraw, Swimming and Table Tennis.

Perhaps one of the most anticipated part of the Games is the medal tally: which region in Singapore is the best? Teams are broken up into 15 clusters based on their geographical locations in Singapore. Medals won are then added to the cluster from which the team or athlete is from to make for an exciting Olympics-esque competition for everyone.

For spectators and supporters, this is a great opportunity to watch competitive-level sports, cheer on their teams and be involved in the many fringe activities that are organised in conjunction with the Games.
