Singapore’s streets will be filled with cyclists again this year as OCBC Cycle Singapore 2012 clicks into gear from 2-4 March.
Now into its fourth year, Singapore’s largest mass participation cycling event features a number of new rides in 2012 including an extended Super Challenge (61km) for amatuer cyclists looking to truly test themselves on two wheels. The Super Challenge will cater for up to 1,500 cyclists and already, over 1,000 participants have registered for the event’s longest ride category. The Junior Challenge has also been added to the 2012 schedule, and offers an opportunity for Singapore’s aspiring cyclists (10-12 year olds) to fire their way around the F1 Pit Building track in a high octane 30-minute ride.
The well-established ride categories also return in 2012, including the Women’s/Masters’ and Men’s Criterium events on Friday evening, 2 March, as well as, The Challenge (39km) and The Community Ride (19km) which take place on Sunday morning.
The Business Times Corporate Charity Ride is another new addition for the 2012 event, which will feature as part of The Challenge (39km). Specifically targeted towards companies who want to help raise money for a worthy local charity, The Business Times Corporate Charity Ride will provide the opportunity to ride in teams of four and donate to Dover Park Hospice.
The Junior Challenge will provide young cyclists a chance to join in the fun in the various kids categories which take place early Saturday evening, 3 March. The ever popular Tricycle Ride (100m) will be followed by the three Mighty Savers Kids™ Rides for cyclists aged between 5-9 years.
Registration for all the ride categories closes on 19 February, 2012.
The F1 Pit Building will again host all the action over the three days, with the Cycling & Lifestyle Village set to open at 10.00am on Friday, 2 March providing entertainment and various booths to keep the whole family entertained.
The highlight of the opening day will undoubtedly be the Professional Criterium, featuring over 65 of the world’s top professional cyclists. Spectators will be able to get up close and personal with the riders as they line up at 8.30pm and race around the F1 track under lights. Topping the bill amongst the 18-team starting grid will be the newly formed GreenEDGE team out of Australia which boasts a long list of high calibre riders.
Androni Giocattoli-Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni - the Italian team who raced to victory in the 2011 event, when Omar Bertazzo crossed the finishing line in first place - will be back in town to try for a second title. Team Raleigh-GAC, which includes 2011 USA Professional Criterium Champion Daniel Holloway, will also be arriving in Singapore with their sights set on a podium finish. Closer to home, the OCBC Singapore Continental Cycling team will compete with their newly awarded UCI status.
