More than 10,000 runners took to the streets early this morning for the Nike WE RUN SG 10K race. The runners who signed up for the race celebrated the concept of We Run - where runners connect, motivate and inspire each other. The 10km race also saw Nike athletes Jason Lawrence and Anne Date pounding across the finish line to finish first in the race.

Jason Lawrence was the first to cross the Nike WE RUN SG 10K finish line, topping the male category as well with a time of 34 minutes 4 seconds. He said, “I enjoyed the route, and even though it wasn’t my best timing, I am really happy with my performance. It’s a fantastic race as it brings the running community together, and I am really proud to be part of more than 10,000 people in Singapore who share one common passion - running.”

Similarly the women’s category winner Anne Date also spent the week recovering from a cold, but finished the Nike WE RUN SG 10K in top form with a time of 37 minutes 4 seconds. “I am very pleased with my timing, and this is great especially since I am not a specialist in this distance and have spent most of the week resting. The route was well-designed, allowing me to experience the race atmosphere and connect with the other runners at the same time,” recounted Date, “The Nike WE RUN SG 10K also plays an important role in my preparation for the Southeast-Asia Games, allowing me to assess my physical readiness.”

This year, Nike introduced the Run Buddy Run Nike+ Challenge for the first time in a Nike City 10K run. The Run Buddy Run Nike+ Challenge is a unique platform which allows running buddies to team up online using the Nike+ technology to motivate each other to be the best runner they can be. Running buddies logged in their combined running distances and the highest miles for a pair wins the challenge.

The winning pair, Connie Liang, age 43, and Franxis Yong, age 33, logged a total distance of 1,078km over a month and received exclusive prizes such as 2-night accommodation at the Fullerton Hotel, being chauffeured in a limousine to and from the race venue, $200 Nike vouchers and enjoying the VIP experience on race day.  Speaking about their unique running experience this morning, Yong said, “The Run Buddy Run Nike+ Challenge made us go longer and further as we had a strict focus on logging the distance to win the challenge. Connie would run a minimum of 27km everyday and update me on her distances ran. We are now aiming to win the Run Buddy Run Nike+ Challenge for WE RUN KL on 27 Nov.”

The Nike WE RUN SG 10K is part of the Nike WE RUN City 10K races, where a total of 150,000 runners from 15 cities such as Seoul (South Korea), Monterrey (Mexico) and Santiago (Chile) will be part of a unique run experience combining running and music.

Flagging off from the Old Kallang Airport, the race took runners through a scenic morning route along the Kallang River, weaving through some historic sights like Kampong Glam and Sri Manmatha Karuneshvarar Temple before finishing strongly back at the old airport base.

Runners were also entertained - Nike style - with music provided by well-known local bands and DJs such as Jack & Rai, DJ Two Face and 53A at the Race Village. DJ Chrisp and DJ Roy also kept runners company with their exciting mix of tunes along the route. Renowned visual artists, graffiti artists and illustrators such as Onetwodelta, Sheryo, Zero and TR853-I also completed and unveiled their work on a mural specially created for the race.

To cap off the successful event, Nike Singapore donated USD$10,000 to the Children’s Aid Society. Nike Singapore is also in further discussions with the organization to help develop a sports programme that will inspire and motivate the children and teens under the organization’s care.

“The Nike WE RUN SG 10K concluded with a bang. It was evident that this race brought runners together, connecting them as they motivated and inspired each other to achieve their running potential. We certainly hope that runners will keep this in mind, and know that together, we can attain our goals better and stronger,” said Vijaya Kumar Jayaraj, Marketing Manager, Nike Singapore.
