Your Singapore Spirit can spur our Athletes’ Quest for Glory

In less than 40 days, Team Singapore’s contingent of more than 400 athletes will bring along the Singapore Spirit with them to the 26th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and 6th ASEAN Para Games happening in Indonesia this November and December respectively.

Through a nationwide well-wishing campaign launched by the Singapore Sports Council (SSC), in partnership with NTUC FairPrice, our athletes will embark on their quest for glory with the support of their fellow countrymen.

Singaporeans will share their everyday stories of determination, perseverance and grit, dedicating the values they feel best represents the Singapore Spirit for the athletes to bring to the games.

Pledging the first well-wish for our contingent was Madam Halimah Yacob, Minister of State for Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS), who penned the value of “Dedication” at the launch of the campaign held at FairPrice Xtra @ nex (Serangoon) on 29 September 2011.

“I hope that there will be more Singaporeans who will come forward, to give the support and encouragement to Team Singapore. We are hoping to build up to 100,000 Singaporean well-wishers. I am quite confident that our Team Singapore will be rejuvenated after receiving such strong support,” Madam Halimah said.

She was joined by Mr Lim Teck Yin, Chief Executive Officer, SSC; Mr Gerry Lee, Managing Director (Business Groups), NTUC FairPrice; Mr Ee Tiang Hwee, Chef-de-Mission for the 6th ASEAN Para Games and Mr Antony Lee, Assistant Chef-de-Mission for Team Singapore at the 26th SEA Games, who each pledged a value as well.

“It is our turn to be a source of inspiration for Team Singapore. We want Singaporeans to share their stories, so that our athletes can take the fighting spirit of every Singaporean with them to the Games,” said Mr Lim of SSC. “Our cheers and wishes serve as a reminder that they have the support of the nation behind them. They know that they are not alone in their fight to the podium.”

Present at the event were five Team Singapore athletes, New Hui Fen (Bowling), Mohammad Afiq Yunos (Football), Lim Heem Wei (Gymnastics), Mohammad Shakir Juanda (Silat) and Mohammad Firdaus Nordin (Wheelchair Racing).

When asked about what these well wishes could do to an athlete or a team during the regional tournament, Shakir from the Singapore Silat team replied, “It makes me feel confident as it boosts my morale and makes me want to strive harder to clinch gold for my Singapore.”

Triple gold wheelchair racing medallist at the 2010 International German Open Championships Firdaus, echoed this sentiment, adding that he is now more motivated to work and train even harder to perform well, with more Singaporeans backing him and his fellow athletes’ during the 6th ASEAN Para Games.

From Sep 29 to Dec 22, members of the public can pen a hardcopy of their well-wishes at 64 selected Fairprice outlets across the island, as well as send their online messages via Facebook (www.facebook.com/TeamSG) and the Team Singapore website at www.teamsingapore.com.sg.

In addition, the public can look forward to a showcase of the well-wishes in the form of a 3D stadium which will be on display outside Mandarin Gallery from Oct 24 to Nov 6.

Adding on, there will be four weekend road shows held at FairPrice Xtra stores throughout October at Jurong Point, Ang Mo Kio Hub, Hougang Point, and nex Mall, where Singaporeans will get a chance to win NTUC Fairprice vouchers and Team Singapore merchandise after they pen their well wishes for the Singapore contingent.

The lucky winners of the well-wishing contests would be given the “I Love Team Singapore” travel package for two, worth more than $2,500, to catch our Team Singapore athletes “live” in action at the 26th SEA Games.
