Grosset shines as Stars demolish Tanjong Pagar United

Wilson Grosset’s hat-trick led a rip-roaring Etoile FC to a dominating 6-1 win over a hapless Tanjong Pagar United FC on home ground at the Queenstown stadium.

Four days earlier, home side Etoile unfortunately missed out on a final berth in the RHB Singapore Cup when beaten by Home United due to a lone Frederic Mendy strike. The Stars were also humbled on this very ground 20 days ago, when they were defeated by high flying Albirex Niigata (Singapore) 7 - 2.

With those disappointments fresh in the Stars’ minds, they decided to turn disappointment into motivation and showcased their “true” attacking prowess to the crowd who were present yesterday.

The defending S.League champions were off to a bright start, taking multiple shots on goal in the opening stages and kept Tanjong Pagar’s goalkeeper Ridhuan Barudin on this toes.

Seven minutes into the game, match referee Johan Jahari awarded a penalty kick to Etoile for an unlucky handball which struck a Tanjong Pagar defender from a corner.

Etoile’s talisman, Maxime Belouet was given the task to open the floodgates for Etoile. When the whistle blew, he took a few steps forward and calmly curled it into the top left hand corner to open the scoring.

With that superb spot kick, the home side crowd became ecstatic and started cheering for the Frenchmen. Few minutes later, Jaguar’s Arisman Arman executed an excellent goal saving tackle in the penalty box to deny a second goal for Etoile.

Etoile held on to possession for the next twenty minutes and Tanjong Pagar’s players were forced to chase the ball all around the park. Frustration grew as both teams failed to score and caused both sides to commit unnecessary and dangerous fouls just outside their respective penalty boxes.

In the 43rd min, Etoile’s skilful forward Wilson Grosset managed to get behind his defender just in time to tuck in a loose ball to record his first goal of the game. In the dying seconds of the first half, Grosset took advantage of a miscalculated dive by the Jaguars' custodian and fired a thunderous shot into the back of the net off a weak clearance.

That surprising goal marked the end of the first half and both teams hurried to their individual lockers to receive their orders for the second round of battle. Even though they are three goals behind, Tanjong Pagar stilled entered the field with confidence and the players were motivating each other not to give up and give it their best before the restart.

However, the Jagauars’ hopes of overturning the deficit were shattered by the Stars’ Julien Durand who slammed a shot to the back of the net after the second half kicked off in the 47th minute.

Etoile started to pile relentless pressure on the Jaguars. The Black Cats managed to hold their ground and cleared every ball going their way. Determined to score at least a consolation goal, Tanjong Pagar pushed on and were distributing their balls to the Jaguar’s attackers only to see them lose the ball as there was minimal support from the team members.

The Black Cats continued to fend off Etoile’s attempt for a fifth goal and managed to score a beautiful goal by a moment of brilliance from winger Hafiz Nor. The goal was set up by midfield dynamo, Kim Jong Oh who dragged two defenders with him and release Hafiz with a precise ball into the box, leaving him to break the Stars’ clean sheet.

With the mentality set to attack at all fronts for more goals, the Black Cats left their defence wide open. The ever alert Belouet, spotted the gaps at the back and launched a cross field ball towards Serge Souchon. With a great first touch, he managed to get it down and distributed a pin point cross to Aly Doumbouya who executed a perfectly timed diving header to score the Stars’ fifth goal.

With five minutes left in the second half, everybody anticipated that the game was to end with the score 5 - 1, Etoile in a 6 goal thriller.

However, the quiet yet hardworking Wilson Grosset was not done yet. A quick counter attack led by substitute Kamel Chaaouane saw him create space to lay it back for Grosset, who tapped it in for his first ever hat-trick for Etoile FC.

The 29 year old was brightly shining among the other Stars as the crowd broke into applause after sealing his hat-trick.

The match ended with a few more desperate attempts from Tanjong Pagar, however they were unable to finish the opportunities presented to them.

Etoile Coach, Guglielmo Arena said proudly, “I believed that a lot of discipline from the players brought the goals. We had a lot of chances and could have capitalised on them to score more goals.”

He was delighted with his team putting up a good performance in front of the home crowd and playing good football to emerge victorious.

On the other hand, there were no milder words that could have described just how Tanjong Pagar must have felt as they suffered an unsatisfactory defeat from the hosts.

Tanjong Pagar Coach, Terry Pathmanathan who was relatively quiet throughout the game, shared his views about the game, “Etoile is a strong team. However, conceding this kind of easy goals is just unacceptable. I am quite disappointed with the result, but Etoile are just too strong for my players.”

The Jaguars’ coach was furious at his team for the lack of aggression and determination on the pitch. He also said that he is upset because, if this fixture was in the opening stages of the season, it would be understandable to lose by that margin. However, with the season coming to a close and after all the trainings, to get hammered with that score is just ridiculous.

The superstar of the night with a hat-trick and match ball owner, Wilson Grosset praised his team mates for a wonderful performance and he dedicated the hat trick to his family and his girlfriend.

Grosset hopes to continue his goal scoring streak when Etoile visits Woodlands Wellington on 4th October. On the other hand, Tanjong Pagar United FC would hope to end their losing streak when they host Balestier Khalsa on 3rd October.
