Team Singapore Puts a Smile on Young Faces

As Zena Sim, the rising starlet of the National Table Tennis Team traded a flurry of rallies with her counterpart, the “ooohs and aaahs” echoed excitedly across the sports hall.

Each time a good shot was made, the spellbound children broke into a hearty applause with grins etched across all of their faces.

No, this was not just another competition but Team Singapore making an appearance to bring cheers of a different kind.

As part of an initiative launched by the Singapore Sports Council, the stars of Team Singapore will be given the opportunity to “give back” to society, reaching out to various members of the public with different sports and activities.

Volunteers and the coaches alike kept the spirits at a boisterous level, as the kids were treated to valuable lessons in the basics of table tennis.

The clinic kicked off with the coaches mentoring each student as they tried their hand at the sport. The students were taught how to handle the bat and also were provided with handy advice on the techniques of hitting the ball back to the opponent.

However, the loudest cheers came when the effervescent 21 year-old made her appearance. After displaying her silky skills in a friendly game, the children all clamoured for the chance to play one match with her.

All smiles, Zena highlighted the need to conduct more programmes like these. She further explained, “It is important because as sportspeople, when we play in tournaments, we receive so much support from our fans and fellow countrymen. We are just showing our thanks by giving back to the society.”

The day ended with even more cause for joy as table tennis bats were given to the excited young faces, ensuring that they left the programme having thoroughly enjoyed the whole afternoon.
