Gu Juan the Sole Survivor

On a day where our both of our Women’s Double teams were knocked out, Women’s Single Gu Juan stepped up to the mark to progress to the quarter finals to be played later today.

For a moment it seemed that she too might have been on her way out, losing her first set 16-21 to Japan’s Ai Goto. With the local crowd cheering vociferously and national coach Luan Ching giving her some words of wisdom after the first set, Gu Juan put up a badminton master class.

With numerous smashes and countless drop shots, Gu Juan forced rallied back to win the second and third set 21-16 and 21-15.

Visibly excited about her win she said, “I would like to thank Singaporeans for coming to support me. It certainly boosted my morale. I did not feel any pressure at today’s game but I’m sure tomorrow’s match will be an exciting one because I will be facing third seed Wang Xin. I hope to do my best.”

Having met her pre-tournament target of a quarterfinals spot, we wish her all the best in her upcoming match against third seed Wang Xin.

Go Team Singapore!
