YOG Boys Drawn Against Everton and Flamengo

Singapore Under-15s go up against Newcastle United and Juventus’ youth teams while the YOG team, now the Under-16 side, face the youth teams of Everton and Brazil's Flamengo. (Photo: SSC)

With the participation of major teams such as Juventus FC, Newcastle United, Everton FC and CR Flamengo, the return of this 34-year-old tournament has been greeted with widespread support and enthusiasm.

Besides being able to catch the future stars of Europe and Brazil’s elite teams in action, fans will also be able to catch our Youth Olympic Games (YOG) football boys take to the Jalan Besar Stadium as they form the majority of the Singapore Under-16 team who will also be joined by our Singapore Under-15s in the tournament.

The six teams have been pooled into two groups of three, much like the format used at the YOG in 2010. The two Singapore teams were split into different groups, thus leaving the possibilty of an all Singapore final.

The tournament which kicks off on 18 June will see the Singapore Under-15 going up against Newcastle United and Juventus’ youth teams in group A while the Singapore Under-16 may seem to have an easier ride in group B as they face the youth teams of Everton FC and CR Flamengo.

Playing in a single round robin format, the top two teams from each group will progress to the knock out stages and in a bid to spur the cubs on, title sponsor Canon has raised the stakes by pledging to donate SGD $1,000 towards the development of Singapore football for every goal the cubs score throughout the course of the tournament.

Speaking to Mr. R. Sasikumar, Managing Director for The Red Card with regards to the rumoured star who will be attending this event during the press conference, the former national defender said, “We have tried to find the right star for the right price. With our contacts we have tried to get Ronaldinho to come down but he is unavailable. However, Peter Beardsley might be coming down as he is part of the Newcastle United youth set-up.”
