Marlins Spear Dolphins for a Spot in the Final

The Blaze Dolphins did not give the Nike Marlins an easy time when they faced each other at the NTUC FairPrice Foundation Netball Super League Semi-Final match, held at the Toa Payoh Sports Hall on 9 April. This exciting and evenly contested netball match went right down to the wire, with the Marlins winning 41-37.

There may have been a few pre-game nerves affecting some of the Marlin players as they started the game cautiously. In the first quarter, the Marlins had a string of misplaced passes and also failed to convert the numerous chances that they had.  Although they were trailing most of the time, they somehow managed to mount a comeback to end the quarter leading, 9-8.

The Marlins head coach, Noraida Abdul Malik’s pep talk during the break must have calmed and settled the players’ nerves, as they came out charged up and ready for battle. The Marlins did not give their opponents a sniff in the second quarter and romped to a 14-9 score line.

The Blaze Dolphins never gave up and kept on fighting to narrow the gap. The Marlins tried their upmost best to put this match beyond doubt the Dolphins reach, but somehow couldn’t. This had to be the most exciting quarter, as the Dolphins persevered and got back into the match. The end-to-end action in this quarter left the spectators on the edge of their seats. This high temp round ended 10-11 in favour of the Dolphins.

Capitalising on their momentum, the Dolphins came out in the final quarter with their fins up and tried to even the score and go for the win. There were some very edgy moments for the Marlins and their fans. Though the Marlins ended the final quarter down, 8-9, they did just enough to win the match 41-37. This result earned them a place in the grand final on Saturday, 16 April.

The Dolphins must quickly dust themselves off and remain positive as they have one last chance to get into the grand final.

The players have to take all the positives and draw out every ounce of energy they have left in their tank, as they prepare to battle the adidas Sneakers Stingrays in the preliminary finals tomorrow, 11 April, with the winner proceeding to next week’s grand final.

Earlier in the day, the Stingrays made the Mighty Mannas look not quite mighty by inflicting a stinging 54-43 defeat.
