Cheerleaders - you have heard them from the sidelines, you have seen them on the screens. Now catch them and cheer them on as they go head to head and battle it out at the National Cheerleading Championships 2011!

Held on 19 and 20 March at the Jurong East Sports Hall, this thrilling and exciting event will take place from 12pm till 5pm. MediaCorp 98.7FM’s disc jockeys, Justin Ang and Vernon A will be the celebrity judges.

If you expect a dainty display of pom-pom shaking, prepare to be blown away by the theatrics and skill the cheerleaders will be bringing to the table. After all, the second best cheerleading team in the world, Thailand’s Rangsit University Cheerleading Team, will be among the 40 teams from schools all over Singapore who will bring it on.

“Cheering is vital to the overall sporting experience,” said Ms Sharon Kam, Senior Director, Strategic Marketing, Singapore Sports Council. “Cheerleaders help bring out the soul and passion in each fan, and we want to see a burgeoning cheer culture among Singaporeans. Whether is it cheering for our Team Singapore athletes during the SEA Games and World Netball Championships, for your favourite S-League team, or for your school mates during the National School Games or even during inter-class competitions, we want to hear your voices.”

The cheerleaders will have their voices heard, and their moves seen, in two segments. The ‘Competitive’ segment, featuring an original cheer routine, and a ‘Freestyle’ segment, where teams will let their creativity shine through their own versions of the “Go! Go! Singapore!!” cheer. This will be a no holds barred event, meaning the audience is in for a one-of-a-kind spectacle.

The team with the best routine in the ‘Competitive’ segment will get into the 5th Cheerleading Asian-International Open 2011, while teams who win the Open and High School categories will compete at the 3rd Asian-Thailand Cheerleading Invitational 2011. For the other winners, a cash prize of $800 is up for grabs.

With all the exciting and energetic routines available, there is no reason not to catch this event. And of course, admission is free.
