The prize might have came a day late, but Team Singapore fencer Cheryl Wong would still have been pleased as she celebrated her 20th birthday with a nice silver medal on 9 March 2011. The petite foil specialist won the silver at the Asian Junior Fencing Championships in Bangkok, Thailand, for the Individual Women’s Foil event.

The Individual Women’s Foil category saw field of 40 competitors taking part and Wong beat two competitors from Hong Kong in the round of 16 and quarter-finals, before eliminating Japan’s Yasuda Yuki 15-9 in the semi-finals. However, the National University of Singapore Arts and Social Science student, who was part of the team which collected the silver medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Melbourne, Australia, had to again be content with the silver medal after going down to Japanese Aizawa Fatsuk 4-15 in the final.

Team Singapore’s Girls’ Cadet Epee team also collected a medal for the Republic, when they claimed the bronze in the Girls’ Cadet Team event after they were just edged out by Australia in the semi-finals 41-45. The Asian Junior Fencing Championships in Bangkok, Thailand, which started on 4 March, will finish on 13 March.
