Team Singapore’s Women’s Table Tennis Team have been named as the winners of the Straits Times Athlete of the Year Award. At the awards ceremony held at the Fullerton Hotel on 8 March 2011, the team of Li Jiawei, Wang Yuegu, Feng Tianwei, Sun Beibei and Yu Mengyu pipped inaugural award winner Tao Li, shooter Gai Bin, golfer Mardan Mamat and sailing duo Justin Liu and Sherman Cheng to emerge as the first team recipients of the award.

This is also the first time the award has gone outside the swimming fraternity after Quah Ting Wen also won after Tao Li’s win in 2008. The Women’s Table Tennis team were crowned World Table Tennis Champions in May after beating powerhouse China in the Liebherr World Team Table Tennis Championships in Moscow. After that breakthrough, the team also collected the gold at the Commonwealth Games in October and the silver medal in the Asian Games in Guangzhou.

Sponsored by 100 PLUS, the award was presented to the paddlers by Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Dr Vivian Balakrishnan.
