Prep yourselves for the upcoming Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) as the Torch Relay blazes through our streets from 6 August.
The torch relay will kick-start the YOG, but not before travelling to all five community districts in Singapore. 240 Singapore schools; 20 schools and institutions are partnering Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC) to host the torchbearers, kick off the torch relay or organise community celebrations.
The Youth Olympic Flame will be lit in Greece on July 23, home of the original Olympic Games. From there, it will travel to five cities (Berlin, Dakar, Mexico City, Auckland, Seoul) before finally arriving in Singapore!
President S.R. Nathan will welcome the Youth Olympic Flame at National University of Singapore where a flame arrival celebration will be held.
The Journey of the Youth Olympic Flame (JYOF) will commence on the following day until Aug 13 where the flame will pass through housing estates, schools, places of interests and the financial and civil districts. The flame will end at an institution where a community celebration will take place. The public are invited to partake in the celebration where activities and performances will be held.
As part of the YOG Culture and Education programme, the 16 Olympic torches will be on display for the public to view. Five of the torches will be exhibited at the Youth Olympic Village in Nanyang Technological University from August 13 - 25. The remaining torches can be seen at the International Convention Centre (ICC) from August 15 – 25.
2,400 torchbearers will be involved in carrying the 60cm-tall aluminum torch, weighing 1kg, around Singapore in the inaugural 305 kilometres JYOF.
