The Aviva Singapore Badminton Open is back! The premier local badminton event will be held 9-14 June, at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. The tournament is one of just twelve legs of the Badminton World Federation’s (BWF) Super Series, and it will feature some of the best players in the sport coming to Singapore. More than 250 shuttlers from about 28 countries are expected to take part in this year’s tournament, hoping to chalk up ranking points to qualify for the season ending Series finals.

The 4th Singapore Nationals Synchronised Swimming Competition took place at the Ministry Of Education Co-Curriculum Activities Branch over the weekend.

 

Other than our local synchronised swimmers who represented their schools and clubs, there were also other competitors’ from our neighbouring countries like, Indonesia and Thailand. As this sport requires you to hold your breath for a period of time, synchronise your steps to the music and your team mates, and smile whenever your head is visible, you definitely need to have good stamina. Flips, graceful yet powerful spins and turns also add to the beauty of this sport.

 

The Singapore National Team was formed back in 2006 and the team is coached by Yumiko Tomomatsu, a former Japanese Olympiad.

The KIA X Games Asia, the number one action sports competition in Asia, looks certain to start off on a winning note when it opens its gates in Shanghai tomorrow with another impressive line up of world-class athletes for the third consecutive year.

 
Leading Singapore’s contingent is former gold medallist at the 2007 KIA X Games Asia, Mohd Firdaus Abdul Rahman, who will be aiming to regain his title this year at the Skateboard Street event. He will be accompanied by teammate Mohd Nazeer Hussin for the Skateboard Street event, while Chin Zhi Kai, John Chan Sing Kong and Khoo Boon Ann will aspire to feature on the winners’ podium in the BMX Freestyle Street.

“I hope that our win inspire our youths,” said Ooi Wei Ling, co-captain of Sling HD Netball Super League 2009 champion, Stingrays.

The final’s of the Sling HD Netball Super League was extremely electrifying. The pace, skills and the determination to win, showed as both teams battled intensely on court. The Stingrays, who was last year’s runners-up, eventually emerged victorious form the hard fought battle. They took home the title, beating the Marlins 38 -32.

The competition is certainly hotting up with school sports grabbing the prime-time slot on Channel 5. A half-hour slot every Wednesday at 7.30pm, the programme showcases the National School Sports Championships across all the three divisions (A, B and C), with coverage on some 26 sports.

The Singapore Opens Team which comprises of players, who have been selected from performances from various competitions as well as from the Sling HD Netball Super League, will be heading to the United Kingdom for a training tour in preparation for the ASEAN Netball Championships. This championship will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 19 to 28 June. Singapore enters the competition as defending Asian champions and will be looking to retain the title.

The 2009 SSSC/SPSSC National Inter-School Sailing Championship has concluded today after racing in varied light to medium conditions.
Organised by Singapore Schools / Primary Schools Sports Council (SSSC & SPSSC) and Singapore Sailing Federation, there were a total of 423 sailors representing 23 primary, 31 secondary schools and four junior colleges racing in the four-day regatta off the National Sailing Centre.
