Singapore to host first ever Asian Youth Games in 2009
 
In half a year’s time, Singapore will welcome about 1,300 young athletes from 45 National Olympic Councils (NOCs) for the first ever Asian Youth Games (AYG).
 
The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) has given Singapore the nod to host the multi-sport event for athletes aged between 14 and 17.
 
Top athletes will be here next year from 29 June to 7 July to compete in the 9 sports offered, namely athletics, aquatics (swimming and diving), 3-on-3 basketball, beach volleyball, bowling, football, sailing, shooting and table tennis.

Singapore’s successful bid for the Asian Youth Games (AYG) was the Host City Contract & Commercial Rights Release Agreement Signing Ceremony held yesterday. This event in June 2009 marks the fourth multi-sport event hosted by Singapore, since the Southeast Asia Games in 1993. The ceremony was held at D’Marquee at Downtown East which will double as the Games Village for the duration of the AYG.

Minister of Defence & President of Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC), Mr. Teo Chee Hean, Vice-President of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), Mr. Timothy Fok and Permanent Secretary for Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS), Mr. Niam Chiang Meng signed the agreements.

It was witnessed by International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board Member and Vice-President of SNOC, Mr Ng Ser Miang and Director General of the OCA, Mr. Husain Al-Musallam.  Also introduced was the Singapore Asian Youth Games Organising Committee (SAYGOC) with Mr. Teo Ser Luck, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Community Development, Youth and Sports, and Transport as its adviser.
