A well taken header from Gombak United striker Fazrul Nawaz in the second half was all it took to give Gombak a vital and well deserved victory over Home United in the clash that took place at the Jalan Besar Stadium last night.
 
Gombak started the match well, holding most of the possession and being the more domineering side of the two. But they were not able to create any goal scoring chances while Home United looked much closer to scoring the first goal.

S-League newcomers Etoile FC announced a deal with processed food giant Ayam Brand yesterday, ending their search for a major sponsor. The Ayam Brand logo will be featured on Etoile’s team jersey until the end of the season. The logo will be prominently featured on the front of the shirt only for tomorrow’s match and will subsequently be featured on the sleeves of the jersey.

More Singaporeans are working out more, according to latest figures released by the Singapore Sports Council (SSC).
 
The figures show more than 12.84 million visits last year to SSC facilities, which include swimming pools and sports centres, as more people are maintaining a healthy lifestyle through exercise and sports. The latest figures are the highest number recorded.

Singapore bowler, Jazreel Tan, 21, will be joining 6 other fellow bowlers in this year’s USBC Queens bowling championship in El Paso Convention Center in Texas, USA.
 
The others are Bernice Lim, Cherie Tan, Geraldine Ng, Jasmine Yeong-Nathan, New Hui Fen and Shayna Ng.

Hot favourites Singapore Chinese Girls’ School’s (SCGS) emerged victorious over Raffles Girls’ School (RGS) in the B division final of the Schools National squash to take the crown for the fifth consecutive year.
 
The match could have easily gone RGS’s way after Sarah Heah fell 1-3 (9-11, 11-6, 7-11, 9-11) to RGS’ Melissa Foo. SCGS skipper, Sherilyn Yang then equalized in spectacular fashion when she overpowered Kimberly Chan 3-0 (11-3, 11-6, 11-4).

Geylang United’s foray in the 2010 AFC Cup has ended at the group stages.
 
The Eagles, semi-finalists in the 2004 edition, drew 1-1 with Hong Kong side Wo Foo Tai Po, on Tuesday, 20 April in Hong Kong, but a goalless draw between Da Nang and Thai Port FC in the other group match extinguished the slim hopes Geylang United harboured of making it through to the knock out stage.
 
The Eagles came into the match with half of their first team missing due to injury and suspension, but they still managed to take the lead in the 13th minute through a peach of a strike by Hafiz Rahim.

Although their odds of qualification for the knock out round is slim, Geylang United coach Mike Wong is positive his side can pull off a victory against bottom of the table WoFoo Tai Po of Hong Kong in an AFC Cup tie on Tuesday, 20 April in Hong Kong.
 
Geylang United have only two points from their four matches played, and will need to beat Tai Po and hope Thai Port are defeated by already qualified Da Nang in the other match to stay in the hunt for second place in Group G.

Jenson Button may have won the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai on Sunday, April 18, but on home soil, particularly at the Kartright Speedway in Jurong West, it was 10 year-old Jon Lee who took top honours in the Cadet (ages 8-11) category in the opening round of the Nescafe National Karting Championships.
 
Jon upset hot favourite Daim Hishamuddin over the 17-lap race to clinch 20 championship points, awarded to the first place winner. Karting prodigy Daim was racing for the first time in Singapore, having made a name for himself in numerous races overseas, especially in Malaysia, where his father is based.

A try by Sri Lankan centre Chimara Vithanaga, in what was essentially the final play of the match, sent the Singapore Lions crashing to a 23-16 defeat in the finals of the Asian 5 Nations Division One Championships on Saturday, 17 April at Yio Chu Kang Stadium.
