Close to 4000 women from all walks of life are expected to turn up on Saturday, 6 March at the Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza, for the Amore Women’s Day Out (AWDO) 2010- the country’s largest women-only aerobic-based event. This year will see the largest turn out of women, gathering in a single day, since the event was introduced in 2003.

It seems even the dogs get to compete in runs nowadays. In January, there was the RustiRun, held at East Coast Park, where dogs and their owners pitted their running ability against each  other. This Saturday (6 March), the dogs will get their day once more. As part of the Hotdog Carnival 2010, the Hotdog Energia run will see dogs and their owners competing in a 4km City Challenge.

In the end, the weight of expectation proved too much for the Lions to shoulder, and after a 2-1 defeat at Jordan, the Lions will need to pick up the pieces following their failure to qualify for Asia’s showpiece event, the 2011 Asian Cup in Qatar.
In a qualifying campaign that raised the hopes of a nation of a first appearance in a continental competition, the Lions, missing several key men, could not come away with the victory they needed, and it was the Jordanians who showed that they wanted it more.

One could only remember all too clearly the headlines when Iran beat Singapore 3 - 1 at the National Stadium back in January. Most revolved around the same notion of the Lions needing a favour from the Iranians to qualify for their first Asian Cup on merit. Yesterday, the favour was done. With Bryan Robson’s Thailand beaten in Tehran, a draw would have seen the Lions clinch second spot in Group E, sending them through to the finals next year in Qatar. Unfortunately, Raddy Avramovic’s men could not fulfill their end of the deal at the King Abdullah International Stadium in Amman. They succumbed to a home side that had previously beaten the mighty Iranians on the same ground.

Local football fans may be casting one eye on the crunch Asian Cup Qualifier in Amman, Jordan and the other eye on the League Cup semi finals that will take place today and tomorrow (3 & 4 March) at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
 
Gombak United, Woodlands Wellington, Etoile FC and Sengkang Punggol are the four protagonists playing for two places in Saturday’s showpiece final. Tonight, a much changed Gombak side takes on Woodlands and tomorrow, Etoile will play Sengkang, their second encounter in the space of two weeks.

Singapore’s hopes of having their very own F1 driver could soon be a reality. 11 year-old Go Kart prodigy Daim Hishammudin Hasan signed a sponsorship deal with CIMB Bank on Wednesday, 3 March.
 
Daim, a Singaporean who is residing in Malaysia, has been touted as one of Southeast Asia’s leading F1 hopefuls. Daim’s achievements so far include, winning the 2008 Malaysian Yamaha SL Cup and Asia MicroMax 2009.

The Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA) will have $300,000 more in its coffers over the next three  years to help in developing young talents, this, after signing a deal with local semiconductor solutions company QT Technology.
 
Under the auspices of Mr Teo Ser Luck, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports and Ministry of Transport, STTA’s chief executive Wong Hui Leng put her name on paper on Monday, 1 March, at the STTA’s headquarters in Toa Payoh.
