290 riders geared up on the morning of March 28 at Changi Coast Road for the first of two individual time trials planned for the season. Riders welcomed the dry conditions after a week of heavy downpour, setting the ideal conditions for a fast pace on their bikes.

Tim Clarsen of the Team Bike Boutique Racing took emerged victorious in the Mens Open category by beating OCBC Singapore Cycling Team hopeful Ho Jun Rong by 1.5sec. National Champion Low Ji Wen, recently signed with the Korean professional team, Geumsan Ginseng Asia, took third place while racing on his standard road bike.

Singapore’s Gao Ning would certainly have achieved another milestone in his table tennis career had he defeated China’s Zhang Jike, the world no.8, but the latter was definitely not in any mood for a shock defeat by the former.

Zhang Jike, who had previously upset his own compatriot, world no.1, Ma Lin in the quarterfinals took home a cool US$10,000 ( $14,040 ) for his hard work when he cruised to a 4-0 ( 11-9, 11-6, 11-3, 11-7) straight sets victory in the men’s singles title at the Guangzhou Gymnasium yesterday.

Having won the Asian Cup three years ago in 2007 in Hanoi, Vietnam, the 28 year-old Singapore No.1 was hoping to do it again. Alas, the world No. 27 could not match up to the ambition of Zhang.

'The fast and the furious’, ‘2 fast 2 furious’, ‘Tokyo Drift’, I have watched them all. I am a hardcore motorsport junkie with a need for speed. Sadly, all my motorsport experiences so far have only been in front of the tube instead of behind the wheel. Well, all that changed at the launch announcement of the 2010 Formula Drift Singapore.

There were drifting demonstrations by two of our local drivers, Ivan Lim and Jansen Tan. These drivers clad in their thick racing suits looked cool under the scorching sun. I stood there in awe as they drifted their machines around a plastic cone in the cramp car park with ease. The sight, sound and smell will stay with me forever.

SingaporeSports.sg caught up with the affable driver on his thoughts on drifting.

How did you get involved in drifting?

I used to do motorsports like circuit driving for leisure. I wanted to upgrade myself to drive a rear-wheel drive vehicle, which is a bit harder because it tends to over-steer, so I actually purchased a Silvia after which I never did go to the circuit. I just started drifting cause it was just over-steering all over the place. From then I got hooked on to drifting.
