Singapore’s Gao Ning would certainly have achieved another milestone in his table tennis career had he defeated China’s Zhang Jike, the world no.8, but the latter was definitely not in any mood for a shock defeat by the former.
Zhang Jike, who had previously upset his own compatriot, world no.1, Ma Lin in the quarterfinals took home a cool US$10,000 ( $14,040 ) for his hard work when he cruised to a 4-0 ( 11-9, 11-6, 11-3, 11-7) straight sets victory in the men’s singles title at the Guangzhou Gymnasium yesterday.
Having won the Asian Cup three years ago in 2007 in Hanoi, Vietnam, the 28 year-old Singapore No.1 was hoping to do it again. Alas, the world No. 27 could not match up to the ambition of Zhang.
