Geylang United’s first appearance in the AFC Cup since 2004 ended in a hard fought draw with Hong Kong side NT Realty Wo Foo Tai Po on Wednesday, 24 February at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

Tai Po were making their debut in the competition, and it was understandable that both sides played some tentative football in the first half. Both sides showed neither any imagination nor attacking impetus and they were happy to go into the break at 0-0.

Geylang United will make their return to the AFC Cup after a five year absence with a home tie against Hong Kong side, NT Realty Wo Foo Tai Po, at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Wednesday, 24 February at 7.30pm.
The last time the Eagles played in the AFC Cup was back in 2004, in the tournament’s inaugural season. Then, with the likes of Noor Ali, Aleksander Duric and Shahril Jantan in their ranks, the boys from Bedok made it all the way to the semi finals but fell at the final hurdle to Syrian side, Al Wahda.
That was perhaps the best showing ever by a Singapore side in the tournament, and with subsequent clubs failing to get past the quarter final stage, the Eagles will be looking to soar their way to the final this year.

Having been away from home since 2008, returning to his family in Australia is next on his priority list. “The reason for heading back to Australia is family. Besides Singapore, Japan, China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Thailand are also competing for a place. Of concern to the Singapore team is the group all-around event, where groups will take part in 4 hoops and 4 ribbons. The qualifying mark
