When the horn was buzzed, 16 teams of five were in for a test of endurance. It was an unconventional way to spend their Friday night for these youths who competed in this nine-hour swimming event which challenges the speed, endurance and solidarity of a team.

 

The Sundown Swimathon was part of Swim Fest 2010, an annual swimming event organized by NTU Lifeguard Corps. It was held at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) from 10pm on 29th January to 7am the next morning. The teams of five had to swim in a relay fashion throughout the event to compete for the award of the longest distance.

Defending S-League champions Singapore Armed Forces FC will have a chance to make their mark once more in Asia’s most prestigious club tournament after beating Indonesia’s Sriwijaya FC 3-on 30 January to progress to the second stage of the Asian Champions League East Zone Playoffs.
 
All the goals were scored by the Warriors new signings, with Japanese winger Taisuke Akiyoshi settling SAFFC’s nerves with a seventh minute opener, before Uruguayan striker Federico Martinez and his fellow strike partner, Indra Sahdan scored a penalty each in the second half to seal the victory.

The Singapore Slingers take on Indonesian side, Satria Muda BritAma on Sunday, 31 January, as the Asean Basketball League playoffs tips off.
 
The Slingers finished second while Satria Muda finished third during the regular season, and both teams will be looking to get their playoff campaign off to a good start.

All 1,500 slots have been snapped up for the Men’s Health Urbanathlon 2010, an inaugural endurance run which will take place January 31, 2010 along the Singapore River and Marina Promenade. The key to this success is the Urbanathlon’s innovative formula - participants will have to traverse eight obstacles over a 12.5km route in their race to glory.

Singapore Slingers American import Michael LeBlanc only has one mantra when he takes the court. He plays to win.
 
The seven-year professional basketballer, who has played in countries like Colombia, Argentina, Mexico and Australia, is without doubt the key man for the Slingers as they enter the playoffs of the Asean Basketball League this weekend.

This Sunday, January 31, will see a run with a difference at East Coast Park.

Unlike most competitive runs which cater mainly to able-bodied runners, Run for My Lunch 2010 supports social inclusion and is therefore catering to those with disability to take part as well. The event has attracted about 1,500 participants and raised $40,000 thus far.

Fencing Singapore will be holding its annual event - the Novices Fencing Championships 2010 from January 30 - 31 and February 6 at Clementi Sports Hall.
 
The Novices Fencing Championships 2010 is an annual open event organised by Fencing Singapore to allow fencing beginners with less than 3 years of experience get a taste of competing in a fencing competition.

Bowlers New Hui Fen (pix), Krishna Darshini and Basil Low, who shone at last year's Asian Youth Games, will be hoping for more honours as they take part in the 15th Asian Youth Tenpin Bowling Championship held in Kuwait.

 

Good Showing

 

Joining them in the competition from 23 January to 2 February are team mates Gina Lim, Bernice Lim, Christopher Hwang, Justin Lim and Benjamin Lim. They will be competing in the Singles, Doubles, Team events and Masters and the stepladder finals. The girls' team in particular will be aiming for a good showing. At the 14th Asian Youth Tenpin Bowling Championship held in Beijing in 2007, Singapore won the Girls Team Silver.

As the Asean Basketball League (ABL) playoffs draws closer, SingaporeSports.sg spoke to one of the local stars of the Singapore Slingers, 25 year-old point guard, Hong Wei Jian.

 

Known as “Flyboy” on the court and to the fans for his athletic ability and an incredible leap, Wei Jian has been one of the key performers for the Slingers this season in their march to the playoffs. However, he acknowledges that as one of the stars on the team, pressure is part and parcel of the game.
