SF: The new Skate Park at East Coast has a many facets: it is a place for enthusiasts to gather and grow, a world-class venue for capable of hosting international events, and a contributing factor to the fabric of a global city.

In the late 1980s, a small group of extreme sport enthusiasts would gather at the Rock and Roll Skatepark - then the only facility in Singapore. Located in Flanders Square, little is remembered about it, other than the fact that it was operated by an unknown Frenchman. However, there was insufficient demand to keep operations going, and the park closed, much to the disappointment of enthusiasts.

Fast forward to 2009, and the story is very different. The new SkatePark @ East Coast is a world-class facility, built by CONVIC Design - the same designers who built the largest skate park in the world. The joint development by National Parks Board (NParks) and the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) has features that appeal to both novices and professionals, and is a monumental improvement on the existing facilities in Singapore for extreme sports enthusiasts. This is great news for those enthusiasts, who number 30,000 according to a recent survey.
