Entries for June 2008
lemlabs posted on June 30, 2008 09:11
This August, Singapore will be represented by 25 sportsmen and women at
the Summer Olympics in Beijing, the largest contingent ever to be sent
by the country.
The
number coincides well with Singapore’s increased hopes, as compared to
the last couple of editions, of finally winning that second Olympic
medal.
2008 is also the year the
Republic has the most number of Olympic qualifiers, a sign of real
quality in our athletes. 22 of the 25 made the mark.
Still, the list is not final yet. A couple more athletes can still make a push for a place, while others are waiting for a reprieve.
All Olympic nominations must reach the Games organizers by 23 July.

A proud family.

Friends, schoolmates, cross-country
teammates and the triathlon community turned up on a Sunday evening to
celebrate the memory of Thaddeus Cheong. The 17-year-old collapsed a year ago
after a personal-best SEA Games trial.
To mark a year’s
anniversary of his passing on 24 June 2007, the Thaddeus’ Memorial Run
was held today at his school Raffles Junior College’s (RJC) stadium
track.
Organized by his family and some family friends, people
turned up to remember the brave boy, who served not just his country
well, but was a beacon of light for his loved ones. |

Amidst the growing number of run and endurance sport events sprouting
up in Singapore, the largest mass run on the local calendar is back
with something new.
In
a first for Asia, the 21km participants of the SAFRA Singapore Bay Run
& Army Half Marathon (SBR & AHM) 2008 will zip across a
barrage. The first reservoir and dam built in a city, the Marina
Barrage runs across the Marina Channel and offers flood control and a
host of recreational possibilities.
“It is our aim to
continually refresh the running routes for the benefit of our yearly
participants. The addition - the Marina Barrage - is especially
exciting to us. For those who are able to run across the barrage, it
represents a visual treat, which is simply breathtaking as you take in
the city skyline, reflected across the water expanse”, said
Brigadier-General (BG) Hugh Lim, Chairman of the Organising Committee
for the SAFRA SBR & AHM 2008 and Vice President, SAFRA.
The SAFRA SBR & AHM 2008 will be
held on 24 August, and is part of National Day celebrations. Normal
registration ends on 30 June, with all registration closing on 31 July.

Despite a rain delay, Lam Chih Bing held on to win the third leg of the
OAAG Golf Tour ahead of his participation at The British Open.
The TGT Challenge was held at Jurong Country Club from 23 - 25 June
with 72 professional golfers playing for a total prize purse of $33,000.
Going into the final round with a two stroke lead, Chih Bing looked set
to extend his winning margin when he came out of the front nine with
three birdies. However, a 30 minute rain delay saw the greens slow
down, resulting in three bogies for Chih Bing to finish at even par for
the day. |

Garuda International Friendly - Indonesian Garuda Team
Softball enthusiasts can look forward to a lot of fast pitching and
fielding action at the Kallang Diamonds end of this week. The Singapore
Baseball & Softball Association (SBSA), in preparation for next
year’s Asian Women (Youth) Softball Championship, has invited the
Indonesian Garuda Team to Singapore to play our National Youth trainees.
30 youth players (mean age 17) have been selected from various schools and tertiary institutions. The friendly games against the
Indonesians will be a baptism of fire for our girls, who come from
various teams and different sporting background. This will be the first
time they will be playing together on the same side, rather than
against one another.

The growing vibrancy of this sporting hub was supposed to see a
world-class star-studded carnival next weekend. But alas, the final
step - official sanctioning from governing bodies - could not be
achieved.
There
were already concerns when it was announced in May, whether the iSixes
World Series, a cricket tour that would feature all nine Test-playing
nations, is an officially recognized event.
Singapore was to be the first country to hold it, on July 4-6 at the Padang. Other legs included Shanghai and Dubai.
