It is a sport played by over 20 million people across 70 nations and 5 Continents. Not only is it a sport played by many, it is also a spectator sport watched by millions of fans around the world. Why then is Netball not part of the greatest sporting event on earth; the Olympic Games?

“I think it’s because everyone just thinks that Netball is a game played only by women and therefore not a serious enough sport to be included in such a big scale sporting event such as the Olympics.” Says Zhang Ting Jun, National netballer and Singapore representative at the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Netball is not an easy sport to excel in as it requires one to have numerous technical and physical skills; such as balance, hand-eye co-ordination and speed. Some of the world’s fittest female athletes come from this very sport as their years of training build them up to become well rounded athletes. Speaking of top athletes, Australia and New Zealand are the sport’s leading nations and have the best professional netball leagues in the world. In Singapore, approx 350 schools offer netball as a co-curricular activity and that is where it usually starts out for one who eventually becomes a competitive player. It is the most popular female sport in Singapore and it even has its own semi-professional league run every year.
